Your Pain Relief Plan: What to Do First, What Actually Helps, and What to Avoid in St. Charles IL
At Fox Valley Chiropractic Physicians in St. Charles IL, our goal is simple: help you feel better fast—whether you’re in our office or at home. Most people can get meaningful pain relief by following one rule:
Always start with ice.
It’s the fastest way to calm swelling, reduce irritation, and get you moving again.
This guide shows you exactly how to use ice, when heat makes sense, and which supplements can support your recovery.
Ice: Your First Step for Pain Relief
Ice is the most reliable way to reduce pain and swelling for almost everything we treat.
Your painful area behaves like a fresh ankle sprain—swollen, irritated, and not getting enough blood flow to heal efficiently. The joint is the primary source of your pain. You need to move the swelling out so fresh blood can move in. This new blood brings the food and oxygen your injury needs to heal.
How to Ice Correctly
- Place a damp towel or one layer of t‑shirt between your skin and the ice pack
- Ice for 10–15 minutes, up to once per hour
- Aim for 2–3 sessions per day for steady improvement
Why Ice Works
- Reduces pain and swelling
- Relieves pressure on the joint
- Provides pain relief that continues after you remove it
- Brings fresh, oxygenated blood to speed healing
If icing increases your pain (rare), stop and let us know.
Heat: Helpful Sometimes, Not the First Choice
Heat can feel good temporarily, but it often increases swelling and slows recovery.
If heat helps you:
Use moist heat (hot shower, bath, or heating pad) for up to 20 minutes.
But keep icing for the swelling—heat does not replace ice.
Medication: Use Sparingly
New research suggests that frequent use of over‑the‑counter pain relievers during a new injury may interfere with the healing process. This can make an injury linger much longer than it should.
Our recommendation:
Use medication only when necessary—for sleep or to get through essential activities. It won’t speed recovery, and using it all day long may prevent the injury from healing.
Vitamins & Natural Support: A Stronger Role
Turmeric (Curcumin)
Turmeric is one of the most researched natural options for reducing swelling.
We recommend Inflavonoid Intensive Care, available in our office, for patients who want a high‑quality, clinically reliable option.
Why supplements matter
- Support your body’s natural anti‑inflammatory pathways
- Help reduce pain and swelling around injured joints
